When Ares brought the Kakawahie to Wolf Hallow Preserve as part of a plan to help bring them back from extinction he had brought a male and female to be a breeding pair. The two had been raised separately and hadn’t met until they were placed in an exhibit together at Wolf Hallow Preserve. The female bird fluttered about the exhibit when she was released, she was still fairly young. The red bird sat perched on a branch, watching as the male flew about, curious. She ruffled her feathers then called to the male.

As the male flew towards her, the female Kakawahie shifted on the branch and made room for him to land. She tweeted and twittered at him and he soon began to preen her feathers. The two were getting along just fine and Ares was happy to see them interacting. He had high hopes for the birds, even though he had mixed feelings about the project before, seeing it in front of him now, made him happy to be a part of it.

The two birds were soon both cleaning each other and twittering as they did so. Once each one was satisfied the other was clean, they stopped and soon took flight together to search their new home.

Finding Food | 246 Words

In order to simulate a Kakawahie’s natural diet Ares had various Hawaiian native insects and their larvae ordered. While raising the insects he also utilized them as an exhibit in the Earthly Wonders building where many insects, reptiles and amphibians resided. Ares also ordered various fruits and seeds that would be found on the island where the Kakawahie was native to and where they would be released to when the time came.

Ares and his wife Illiana placed the various fruits and seeds around their exhibit as well as parts of wood that held the insect larvae for the birds. Soon enough the female Kakawahie had come upon a log that had been added to the exhibit by the humans. She hopped around examining it before she found where a larva had bored into the wood, she quickly stuck her beak in and pulled it out, eating the small insect happily. The female then began to search the log for more of the delicious creatures, pulling a few more out before a new scent caught her nostrils.

After getting full on bugs, the female Kakawahie took flight, following the fruity scent to a branch where the male currently sat pecking away at a fruit and eating its insides. She tweeted to him, landing beside him and watched. He made room for her and she moved up, starting to eat the fruit as well. She quite enjoyed the sweet fruit that had been placed in their exhibit.
