Spring Vancouver Pups

When spring had came to Wolf Hallow Preserve the previous years pairings proved to be fruitful as the packs all began to have their puppies. Though it was a species of least concern in the animal world, the Vancouver Island Wolf, a subspecies of the Grey Wolf, Ares and Perses planned on releasing into the wild, the three male pups that Alexander and Alexandria had whelped. For the time being though, the wiggly little beans would live on the preserve for the first year of their life before they would be released. Everyone at the preserve was excited for all the litters being born. Some wolves would be kept, others sent off to outside breeding programs while the rest would be released into the wild in hopes of rebuilding natural packs.

Alexandria, a lighter black colored female laid in her human made den, which was currently equipped with a camera to monitor the pups development as well as to live stream on Wolf Hallow Preserve's website for others to view and potentially send donations to the preserve. She spent most of her time here now that the pups were born while Alexander, her mate, a darker black colored wolf, hunted for her or brought her the meat placed out for them. Though the Vancouver Island wolves were in the massive open enclosure where the packs were given the opportunity to hunt for their food like out in the wild, the staff still liked to offer carcasses. Especially with a pack only consisting of two wolves and one of them currently nursing three pups.

Alexander was out searching for food at the moment and had been gone since the morning. It was nearing midday now and the male had still not returned. Alexandria was growing hungry and worried for her mate. She anxiously licked her pups as they nursed. Greedy little things they were, almost as if they were attached to her belly. The female was growing weary from being in the den so much. She whined softly giving her pups a few more licks before she stood and exited the den. Once outside in the sun, Alexandria stretched and yawned, licking her lips as she looked around, scenting the air. Inside the den, the pups whimpered and whined as they cuddled with each other now that their mother was gone.

Alexandria padded around a bit, wanting to stretch more and also went to relieve herself. By the time she was ready to head back into the den, Alexander still had not returned. She huffed softly, looking around once more before going down below. Inside the den, her pups had fell asleep in a little pile, she gave a wolfy smile at the sight and went over to curl around them.

Shortly before night fell, Alexander had returned with a beaver he had found, though how one had ended up in the Crescent Canyon enclosure was a mystery. Though perhaps he had been there before the fence went up, Ares and Perses hadn't needed to stock any herbivores in the three years the fence had been up as there had been a decent amount of animals when it went up. Perses and Ares had also brought in some large herbivores to better establish a population before bringing in the wolves.

None the less, Alexandria was excited to see her mate and even before she had seen him, she had scented him and was thumping her tail as he came into the den. Alexandria stood from her sleeping pups and went over to Alexander, giving him soft licks before moving to the half eaten beaver and quickly set to eating the other half. Alexander padded over to his pups and lowered his head giving them a few snuffs before licking them and laying down by them while his mate ate her fill.

Soon enough Alexandria had finished off the beaver and then exited the den, leaving Alexander sleeping with the pups. Once outside, Alexandria lifted her head to the night sky watching the stars and moon for a moment before heading off to the stream that ran through the woods behind where their den was. The female wolf was thirsty after eating and being in the den all day. Now that Alexander was back and watching the pups, she could truly leave and go further. The female soon came upon the stream which was full with the winters thaw, she lowered her head and soon began to drink her fill. Once she was done, Alexandria left the stream to roam their territory, marking it where she seen fit.

Thankfully the enclosure was over 100 acres with plenty of room for the various packs in the preserve, so they didn't really worry too much about over lapping or fighting. At least at the moment while numbers were still small, but Ares planned on keeping the amount of wolves manageable to the land and also to the herbivores for balance. In an attempt to recreate their natural environment to make releasing easier.
